CalvinLiangWorkshop
I enjoyed a five day workshop with Calvin Liang, master oil painter and artist. He began each of the five days by doing a demo from 9a.m. to 10:30a.m. Then we set up and painted till about 3:30p.m. Calvin would move from one person to the next offering suggestions and reminding us of the four foundations of oil painting: Paint shapes, not the thing; paint darkest value first, then the other 3 values; paint using complementary colors and grays; paint using a variety of edges. Calvin begins his painting by using a stick of charcoal to draw an outline on the canvas. The outline offers the design for the painting. He showed us a type of notebook where he keeps many black and white drawings, which are multiple designs of the same scene. He picks the strongest design to paint. By the fourth day, I was beginning to execute his method of painting plein aire. I took a lot of photos as he was okay with us using our cameras. Some of each day will be included as soon as I figure out how to get photos into my blog.
